London Fashion Week Expands Animal Skin Ban, Says BOF

London Fashion Week is taking a bold step forward in sustainability and ethics by banning wild animal skins from its runways, following last year’s historic prohibition on fur. According to The Business of Fashion (BOF), brands wishing to participate in the event’s official schedule must now pledge not to use materials like crocodile or snakeskin in their collections.

This landmark decision was announced by David Leigh-Pemberton, deputy director for policy and engagement at the British Fashion Council, during a speech in parliament earlier this week.

The move comes as pressure from animal rights activists mounts to make exotic skins as socially unacceptable as fur in major fashion markets. It also signals a strategic pivot for London Fashion Week as it seeks to maintain relevance against the rising dominance of Paris and Milan in the global industry.

However, the shift could prove more complex for luxury brands, where exotic skins remain a highly profitable and integral part of many collections.
