Second Wind: How Joy J. Is Conquering the Fashion World at 72
1. Life Before London
- Can you share a bit about your life in New York before moving to London?
Joy J.: I spent most of my time walking in fashion shows and traveling between my home in Maryland and my apartment in NYC. New York was exciting — I walked in 14 shows between September 2023 and June 2024, and I was featured in several small magazines. A photoshoot at the Virgin Hotel in an evening dress by Manuel Tiscareno in June was the cherry on top of my NYC experience.
- What were some of the key moments or challenges that shaped your journey there?
Joy J.: Being signed by an agency was wonderful and happened so fast. I had literally just started modeling and was signed within two weeks. It was a small agency, but they pushed me beyond what I thought I could do — it was a great experience. The biggest challenge was not feeling old among the younger models. You look at their youthful, beautiful faces and think, “What am I doing here?” But then you’re picked to model and realize they see something in you that you might not see in yourself. Eventually, that feeling disappears because you know why you were chosen: you have the walk, the look, and the energy.
2. The Move to London
- What inspired you to leave New York and start a new chapter in London?
Joy J.: The inspiration to leave NYC was my family and the friends I met here. I’m blessed to have met so many wonderful people. Leaving New York was hard because I had worked so hard to build name recognition over six months. But sometimes, you just know when something is right. London and Europe feel right for me at this stage of my life.
- How did it feel to embrace such a significant change in your life?
Joy J.: Terrifying. So many “what if” questions crossed my mind: What if I fail here? What if I can’t work here? But I’ve survived COVID, cancer (twice), and being a widow living alone for eight years. I embraced my ability to model, not only in fashion catwalks but also in commercial advertising and lifestyle marketing.
3. First Impressions and Challenges
- What were your first impressions of London and its fashion industry?
Joy J.: I fell in love with London — its rich history, beautiful historical architecture, and even its amazing modern buildings. The fashion industry was welcoming, and I’ve been enjoying meeting new designers and having the opportunity to walk for them.
- Were there any unexpected challenges you faced when settling in?
Joy J.: The cost of living and finding a place to rent were major challenges. Also, while I speak English (well, American English), I initially had trouble understanding the British accent — which is funny, considering my family is from Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.
4. Fashion as a Healing Journey
- How has being part of the fashion industry helped you rediscover yourself?
Joy J.: Even when I modeled in my youth (16–27), I never thought I was beautiful. Now, I love the way I look. I embrace my white hair, gray eyes, and slim body. I’m 72, and my body has scars, wrinkles, and loose skin from losing so much weight after COVID. But I’m alive, I love myself, and I’m living the best life I can.
- Do you feel that fashion can be a form of therapy or self-expression?
Joy J.: Absolutely. Fashion gave me life when I thought it was over. Today, you can dress however you want — be colorful and punky or elegant and stylish, at any age. For me, I lean towards conservative elegance, but don’t be surprised to see me running around Greenwich in a baggy sweater, leggings, and no makeup!
5. London Fashion Day Experience
- How did it feel to be part of London Fashion Day?
Joy J.: It was a lot of fun, and I felt honored to be asked to be the face of London Fashion Day. It showcased me as a silver fox model and gave me the chance to inspire other mature women to see that it’s never too late to start over.
- What did this experience mean to you personally and professionally?
Joy J.: Personally, it showed me I have value and worth as a fashion model. Professionally, I hope it opens doors for me to walk in London Fashion Week and gain recognition in the European market, including France, Italy, and Spain. I also dream of branching into acting, commercial marketing, and lifestyle campaigns.
6. Age and Inclusivity in Fashion
- What does being a mature model mean to you in an industry often focused on youth?
Joy J.: It means I have to work twice as hard to get jobs in catwalks, marketing, and advertising. Big brands often assume older women can’t sell clothing, but I want to show what a size 4 dress looks like on someone my age. And can anyone explain why 50- or 60-year-old men are paired with 20-year-old models? Why not match them with age-appropriate women?
- Do you see the fashion world evolving to include more diversity in age?
Joy J.: It’s evolving, but not fast enough. Brands need to focus on real men and women, regardless of age, who have the financial resources to buy their designs.
- What message would you like to send to women who think it’s “too late” to follow their dreams?
Joy J.: When you stop dreaming, you stop living. Take a chance on yourself. A year ago, I was isolated and lost. Then, inspired by an older model, I pursued my dream. Today, I’ve been mentioned in Vogue twice. It wasn’t the cover, but it will be soon. I’m turning my dreams into reality.
7. Personal Insights and Inspiration
- What motivates you to keep pushing boundaries and redefining yourself?
Joy J.: I want to live my life to the fullest. Every day, I learn something new about myself. I’ve discovered I’m a talented poet and writer, and I embrace the fact that I can shape my identity into whatever I want. Right now, I want to be a fashion model branching out into commercials and acting.
- How do you stay confident and positive in the face of challenges?
Joy J.: Confidence doesn’t come easily. Some days, challenges weigh me down, especially being alone. But I remind myself that older women can excel in fashion and shout, “Wake up, industry! We can do this!” Then I put on a designer’s dress, turn up the music, and walk like no one’s watching (but please, capture my good side).
- What advice would you give to someone considering a major life change but feeling hesitant?
Joy J.: Make a pro-and-con list, then shred it! Don’t wait. Live each day as if tomorrow isn’t promised.
8. Looking Forward
- What are your goals or dreams for the future, both in fashion and personally?
Joy J.: In fashion, I want to show the world that white hair means vibrancy and beauty. Personally, I plan to finish my book of poetry, write a children’s book, and maybe find a kind, sincere man to share my life with.
- How do you hope to inspire others through your journey?
Joy J.: I want people to know they can achieve anything with dreams, determination, and the right support. Live your dreams!
9. Final Reflections
- If you could describe your life’s journey in one sentence, what would it be?
Joy J.: An adventure filled with boulders — if I couldn’t move them, I climbed over them.
